When I drive by a construction site and see the frame carpenters on their ladders I do not think to myself, “Oh they're building a frame.”, rather, I think they are building a house. We name things for what they will one day be not only by what we currently see, so it is with the Christian man or woman. Do not be discouraged at your slow start on the Christian walk or rebuilding your marriage. Please continue to take one step at a time.
A Model Friend
Friends are loyal. Jonathan was a constant friend. Proverbs 18:24 teaches us “There is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.” Friends stick! There is NOT a cost-benefit analysis going on. We also see in Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” As we consider biblical friendship we are helped to keep this Tim Keller quote in mind “You will never get through adversity without a FRIEND, you will never get through life without adversity…so…. you’ll never get through life without a friend.”

Because [we live in a litigious society] we are constantly drawing conclusions about what is right in our lives and what is wrong we are constantly swimming in the soup of “right vs wrong” and as a result constantly judging ourselves and one another. At the front of our minds is “Right vs Wrong”, “Correct vs Incorrect”, [faster] “Fair vs Unfair”, and “Just vs. Injustice”.

The crowd asks him, “How’d you get over to the west side of The Sea of Galilee?” He fed the 5000 on the east side they’re all on the west side now because they took boats, but they never saw Jesus get into a boat. They want to know the miracle he did. But Jesus won’t go there with them. Instead, he tells them about their hearts in the very next verse. He reveals their motive to help them see what is true about themselves so they can have a chance to SEE Him.
The Self In Self-Harm
Hope is an elusive concept. I can remember in 2018 a world-renowned chef and a world-renowned designer both committing suicide within days of one another. I remember thinking again that hopelessness is rampant, even for those at the top of their respective professions.
I must guard my heart. I can get caught up placing my hope in a person, thing or circumstance and never obtain it and become hopeless. I can place my hope in a person a thing or circumstance and obtain it and say, “Is this all there is?” Discovering that my hope was, as it turns out, misplaced.
Biblical Counseling vs. Secular Therapy
Secular talk therapy is caricatured all the time. This is due to the father of the American Psychiatric movement, Sigmund Freud, who had all his clients lie on a couch. I have had many people come into my office and then half-kidding look at the couch and with tongue firmly in cheek ask, “Should I lie down?” Similarly, biblical counseling is caricatured. We picture a stodgy old man or woman with lips pursed and a copy of a Bible opened to the book of Leviticus and with a judgmental look demanding “… just stop sinning!”.
